This little piggy went…
As I mentioned, my small toe on my right foot was not at all thrilled
with the descent on the first day’s walk. So, I started today by wrapping
it as carefully as possible and then stuffed it into my boot. A few
blocks later I was still limping, so it was time to rethink my
strategy. I took off the Mole Skin and Band-Aid and ended up
wrapping it together with the neighboring toe. It was much happier
that way.
I was to meet Molly and Pauline on the bridge out of town at
7:00am. I texted them to say that I was heading
out. Along the way I grabbed some breakfast and a coffee. Then off
to meet them on the bridge. When I got there, no friends and no
text. So I waited a bit and then texted them to say "have a wonderful
day" as I was heading out. Maybe I had overstayed my welcome…
So, I ended up walking most of the day alone, casually meeting old and new friends/pilgrims along the way. To be honest, I missed my walking companions. Like my toe, I had become accustomed to leaning on them. It was nice to have someone to watch my bag when I went for coffee or a snack. I missed our conversation and their sense of humor. Molly eventually texted to say that they decided to take a lazy morning and leave later than planned.
Gloria became a new friend and as we passed each other during
the day. We had fun cooling our feet in the fountain
together. I met a charming Japanese shop owner who was personally
signing each stamp on our passports. She was thrilled to hear that I
had recently been to Japan. Lots of nice
people on the Camino.
Around one corner today, someone had put a huge jug of water out at their front gate. They had small crackers in a tray with olive oil and the best salted peanuts that I have ever had. What a wonderful surprise from a stranger!
Day 5 is now done and I have new foot cream for my feet. The box claims it “prevents and relieves
overheating” of my feet. Sounds good to me!
